As an 18 year old currently studying business and marketing at Sheffield Hallam University the opportunity to gain real world work experience is an invaluable one. I was born in London, spent most of my youth growing up on the tropical island of Zanzibar and in 2007 moved over to the Isle of Man. In 2014, I had the opportunity to do a thoroughly enjoyable work experience placement at FPS Group. During this time I was given the chance to work in different aspects of the business ranging from operations, accounts, sales to marketing.
This year I have been fortunate enough to return to FPS to secure a summer intern position in the marketing department. I came in with a sense of apprehension at the task ahead but at the same time I knew this would be a great opportunity for me to learn and further develop my skills.
On my first day I was introduced to James, who is the head of marketing. James introduced me to everyone, briefed me on the company and explained how umbrella solutions work. Thankfully we clicked almost straight away. He has taught me a vast array of different marketing skills and knowledge on the umbrella industry that has been vital to my role. I have so far worked on a really diverse and broad array of tasks including designing marketing materials, developing websites, running email marketing campaigns and managing social media accounts. Five weeks into the placement James left the office for a week to get married leaving me to man the ship alone. It was incredibly daunting but I relished the challenge and came out the other side with invaluable experience.
Everyone at FPS is very kind and welcoming, with the office having a broad array of different characters which I feel really helps to strengthen team work across the company. There is definitely a strong sense of togetherness in the company with many staff having formed close family like bonds with each other.
I feel with my FPS work experience and a degree secured in business and marketing, many doors will hopefully be opened for me in the near future.
I would like to thank the whole team at FPS Group and especially Lynne, Matthew and James for this wonderful opportunity.
