Nurse's case study

The life of an agency nurse is a varied one. There's not much point in setting the alarm clock because the work does not revolve around typical workaday parameters.  It could be in the afternoon, evening or even later when the call from the agency comes in. Whatever the time, the agency nurse is prepared to jump into action.

First is the 'quick change' into uniform. Then the nurse must figure out where to report for work and how to get there. It could be at a hospital, hospice, nursing home, or more likely, at someone's own residence. This can involve driving all over the countryside, bussing into the inner city or just popping around the corner... you never know.

An agency nurse is often greeted by a family member or by hospital staff who likely run through a  lot of important information very quickly, before they dash off. It's important to listen carefully and get all the salient facts in order to provide appropriate care and treatment.  As a temporary worker, an agency nurse might not be back to see a particular patient more than once or twice, so effective communication is key. Then there is the added pressure of being a lone worker accountable for all actions in unfamiliar surroundings every working day.

Being an agency nurse isn't for everyone, but it can be very rewarding. By remaining resourceful and adaptable, these nurses can enjoy an ample income and will be never be bored with their jobs. On any given day the nurse could be involved in paediatric, oncology, surgery or any other aspect of health care they choose.

Of course there are risks, too.  Being self employed means agency nurses have no works pensions and annual leave often depends on the individual's ability to put away his own rainy day or holiday funds.

However, for those that feel that agency nursing is the right choice, partnering with the FPS umbrella company is the an excellent way to ensure the maximum take-home pay and eliminate the administrative headaches of being self-employed, such as invoicing and making tax payments.

Nurses can claim work expenses such as NMC professional subscriptions, costs incurred for irregular, early and late shifts as well as specialist clothing and other fees and disbursements. But, sorting what claims are permitted and which are not can be confusing.

FPS group ensures that the correct tax and national insurance contributions are all made on time. We pay you through PAYE and make all the necessary deductions in full compliance with the HMRC.

We let you focus on what you do best: nursing.
